Making A File Server

What you need:

  • Raspberry Pi with internet connection

Firstly, install Samba with this command in the Terminal:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get upgrade

sudo apt-get install samba samba-common-bin

Next, we need to make a shareable folder.

sudo mkdir -m 1777 /share

Now that we’ve made this new folder, we need to configure it!

sudo nano /etc/samba/smb.conf

Add this to the bottom:

Comment = Pi shared folder
Path = /share
Browseable = yes
Writeable = Yes
only guest = no
create mask = 0777
directory mask = 0777
Public = yes
Guest ok = yes

Now we need to add users to it:

sudo smbpasswd -a pi

Enter your new password.

Finally, restart the server system with this command:

sudo systemctl restart smbd

Now run this command to find your IP address:

hostname -I

You can now commander to the server. If your IP was the server to connect to would be smb://
